What is renter’s insurance really good for?

Saturday, March 06, 2010

Of all of the different kinds of insurance floating around out there, it is safe to say that renter’s insurance is likely the most obscure of them all, and since so many people don’t know about it or use it, it is naturally assumed that you just don’t need it. Let’s take a look at a few circumstances in which renter insurance can be a lifesaver.

While a fire can be an absolutely devastating experience to suffer trough, it can be significantly worse if you lose all of your belongings and you have no legal way to recoup your losses. With renter’s insurance, you do. Almost all renter’s insurance policies protect against fire and they can write you a check right away so that you can replace your lost possessions.

Another important eventuality that you need to protect yourself against is theft. Depending on where you live, theft can be a pretty big threat and the only way to truly protect yourself is with renter’s insurance. In most cases, proving your theft, with the help of a police report is simple and you can go about getting your things back since you will have the money in hand to do so.

Finally, if you live with a clumsy roommate or landlord, renter’s insurance can protect your belongings against accidents done by other people. Policies vary in this category, but in most cases, you can recoup the money from a lost or broken belonging if it was done at the hands of someone else.

My apartment was burglarized. What now?

Saturday, March 06, 2010

There are few feelings worse than coming home after a long day at work and realizing that your apartment has been broken into. It can lead to depression, sadness, anger and other serious emotional problems if you don’t deal with the stress properly. Here are a few things you can keep in mind if this should happen to you.

First off, call your roommate and let them know what happened. They have just as much right to know as you do since they live there and there is a good chance that their belongings are missing, too.

Next, call the police and report what happened. They will dispatch an officer to your place in minutes, and you can file a report. Make sure you don’t touch anything in your apartment and resist the urge to go digging through things to check to see if something valuable was stolen. It helps the cops to have an unspoiled crime scene in which to work with.

Next, call your landlord or your property management company right away and report what happened. They may have security cameras or even security guards that saw something suspicious and didn’t realize that a crime was being committed.

Next, if you have renter’s insurance, and you should have renter’s insurance, make sure you call them and report what happened as soon as you can. They will tell you how to fill out a claim and submit the proof you need to have your claim honored.

Finally, take some time for yourself and decide if you need to speak to a professional. Mentally, having your unit broken into can feel almost like being raped since your privacy and your inner sanctum has been utterly and completely violated. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you feel that you need it.
