Keeping your cats happy and healthy in your apartment

Saturday, March 06, 2010

Since cats are such independent creatures, we tend to forget that they need as much care as they do. Taking care of a cat in a cramped apartment is more than just making sure they have enough food and water, you have to take care of your pet like they were your child. Anything else is a disservice to your beloved pet. Here are a few general tips for taking care of a cat in a small space.

Exercise is absolutely vital for your kitty, so make sure they have a few toys they can play with on their own when you aren’t there or are busy. Hanging toys are especially good for this purpose, and they often very inexpensive and can be bought at a local grocery store or pet store.

Make sure you take a little time to play with them each day. You can use a toy that rattles or has a bell on it or even a piece of string works fine. You are responsible for keeping your cat in shape and mentally sharp so that they don’t suffer from feline depression or other illnesses that can take years off of their lives.

Finally, make sure you take your kitty for yearly check-ups at the vet. They can monitor things like weight to ensure that your cat is as close to optimal health as possible. You can also buy a comb and cleaning kit to help keep your cat in tip top shape. This is especially important if you own a long haired breed.

Atlanta area dog parks

Saturday, March 06, 2010

Atlanta is one of the largest cities in North America as far as land area goes, and with that land area comes larger homes and apartments that have room for dogs as well as cats. While there isn’t that many dog parks and off leash parks in the downtown metro area, there are a few that every dog owner should know about. It is extremely important that every dog owner gets their pet plenty of exercise as frequently as possible so that our four legged friends stay in optimum health. Let’s take a look at just a few of the top dog parks in the Atlanta metro area.

On State St, between 16th and 17th, you will find the Atlantic Station dog recreational area. This is a full park full of playground equipment for kids and plenty of things to do for the adults, as well, but you will likely notice the dogs here are the happiest. This dog area is well lit and a perfect place to take your dog for some run around time after the sun has gone down.

Inside Brook Run Park, just one mile north of downtown Atlanta, you will find the Henry Jones Dog Park. This is an off leash park, but it lacks many of the basic necessities that you and your dog might need. There is no running water or fountain, but there is a dedicated group of volunteers who work hard year round keeping the park in good shape and water buckets are often provided.

Piedmont Park is one of the best known areas in the city of Atlanta and it is often overflowing with playful pooches looking for a good time. You can take your puppy or full grown dog down to Piedmont Park any time for a good run, some fresh water and some intermingling with other dogs.
