Easy ways to get to know your neighbors

Saturday, March 06, 2010

One problem that many residents of Atlanta face is that they never get to know their neighbors. Like most southern cities, the population is transient, which means that people move there from far away, stay for a few years or maybe a decade, and then move somewhere else. This environment doesn’t exactly foster a feeling of closeness or community with your neighbors, so it is up to individuals to try to get out and meet those folks that live next door. Here are a few tips you can use to break the ice.

If you have a few extra dollars to spend, you can make a heck of an impression on your fellow apartment dwellers by throwing a house warming party and inviting everyone on your floor or even everyone in your building. Plan it on a night when something big is happening like a heavyweight fight you can order or some other similar event that everyone will want to watch.

If your building has a crime watch group or some other kind of organized gathering, make a point to go and introduce yourself. This way, you won’t have to spend any money and you can meet the folks who are most concerned about the welfare of everyone in your building.

You could always take the direct approach and simply go knocking on people’s doors, but this can be a bit awkward and some people might not even answer if they don’t know who you are or why you are knocking on their door.

Most people today get by on their own and the feeling of community that used to be omnipresent is now gone in most places, so it can be extremely difficult meeting your neighbors but a connected group is a strong group, especially for crime deterrents, so an effort should be made for your own personal safety.
