Got Kids? Best Atlanta School districts to find an apartment in

Saturday, March 06, 2010

While the city of Atlanta has many wonderful attractions, such as being the cultural center of the Southern United States and a former Olympic host city, one major attraction that doesn’t get enough attention are the many top flight school districts in the city. As most people know, Atlanta is a city that has more than its fair share of money, and with money comes good teachers and dynamic school districts. The list of the best school districts in metro Atlanta is always changing, but the following schools are always at or near the top.

Located to the south of downtown in the beautiful Atlanta suburbs, Fayette County offers some of the most highly regarded schools in the state. With an excellent teacher to student ratio and high graduation rates, Fayette County may be a bit of a drive for some, but it has proven to be a great place to raise a family.

Next, Forsyth County is also one of the best school districts in the Atlanta Metro area. Just as Fayette County is located quite a bit to the south of downtown, Forsyth is located to the north of the city and offers excellent educational opportunities for those looking to live a quieter life away from the noise of downtown.

Finally, Union County is even farther away from Atlanta but is still considered by some to be part of the ever-expanding metro area. There are many wonderful school districts located in the heart of the city, but if you want your children to have the best Atlanta has to offer, head to the ‘burbs.

Finding an apartment in Atlanta with a family

Saturday, March 06, 2010

While there may be laws on the books that make discrimination illegal, if you were to ask anyone with a large family how difficult it is to find an apartment, you would likely hear quite a tale. Families that have multiple small children are often discriminated against by landlords who believe that the kids will be too destructive or too loud once they move in and disturb other tenants. Here are a few things you can do to cut down on your chances of being treated unfairly by a landlord.

The biggest concern most landlords have is about noise and behavior affecting other tenants. If your children are in school, see if you can get letters from teachers or from other independent third parties that vouch for the kids’ behavior. If a landlord can read something that states that your kids aren’t completely out of control, they may be reassured if they have some kind of documentation on hand.

One problem that many mothers and fathers run into is that they are tempted to lie about the ages of their kids or how many kids they have on their applications. The thought process is that if they fudge the truth a little, the landlord will be more likely to give them the apartment. The truth is lying on your application is grounds for immediate eviction and can cause a hole to appear in your rental history that could haunt you for years to come.

Speaking of rental history, having a strong one is your single best ally. Of course, it can be tough to establish a positive rental history if you can’t find anyone to rent to you, but if you are able to get your foot in the door somewhere, make sure you leave on the best of terms and try to get a letter of recommendation for your next apartment.
