Adding better lighting to your apartment

Saturday, March 06, 2010

No matter what corner of the country you live in, some apartment dwellers have the same problems. One of the most common is trying to maximize the amount of light you get throughout your home. Depending on the amenities featured in your apartment, you may or may not have overhead lighting. Overhead lighting often provides the most coverage and is often considered to be the best option, but for the majority of people who don’t, trying to game plan the best lighting options for your apartment can be tough. Let’s look at a few common sense options that you can utilize to help brighten up even the dreariest apartment.

No matter what style of lighting you wish you had in your apartment, pretty much everyone would agree that natural light is the best, but depending on what way your apartment faces and what kind of windows you have, you may receive less sunlight than you want. While it may sound a bit simplistic, check to see when the last time the outside of your windows were professionally cleaned. A few months of dirt buildup can significantly reduce the amount of natural light your apartment gets.

Often times, the biggest lighting problem many apartment owners face is lamp placement. We’re restricted by where we can plug in a lamp unless we want to use unsightly extension cords. If your apartment is in dire need of a light infusion, try moving some furniture around and plugging in your lamp in the most advantageous location and then restructuring your furniture, television and everything else around that. You may be surprised to find out you had enough lighting all along.
